I think Heath caught view of it while it was mid transformation. It's also possible he was even attacked by it, so he was in a rush, however that's another thing that's odd, since he says he doesn't know if it was alive or not yet we fight one that's extremely aggressive, firing lazers and causing earthquakes.
Funnily enough, Briar says "the book was right!" when she sees it, which you'd think she'd see some differences but I guess she's too psycho to care or that's just how it's supposed to look.
