It's really not. /co/ and /vp/ are quite honestly fag central in my eyes. As for why? Girls like cute thing and generally low stress/skill cap games, and Pokemon is great for both.
As for gays, Pokemon/furries bleed into each other, and most furries are bi at least, so there's that. Also, lot of users here are in their early twenties and homosexuality is more accepted, so a lot of gay kids probably grew up on Pokemon, having crushes on the characters and such.
