And to their credit, they were right; the game certainly did sell very well. But it's likely that the sales didn't meet their internal expectations, so rather than try to find out what they did wrong with the game that might've harmed people's interest in it, they want to find something external to blame.
This is the shit corporations do. If it's successful, it's all according to plan. If it flops, then some external forces ruined it and they need to be crushed.
