She at once feels like she's the only one running the Pokemon gym, has to find a way to prove her worth in something that doesn't ask her to be the pretty one, and if all of those put-downs are a regular thing maybe she doesn't fell wanted enough that she'd just take off. Fertile ground to fill in your own blanks, as many have.
