They are making an extreme classic rendition to appeal as hard as possible to classic enthusiasts more than ever, and one that's trying to innovate the series into interactive Pokemon-hunting and exploration systems that isn't just a 40 year old roll RNG to find the monster system anymore. They want to see which one their market will actually prefer to dump their money into.
Succeed or fail, I just hope they learn the right lessons from it; when their Gen 5 experiment "failed", we had to regress - for 6 goddamn pairs of big games - into nonstop gen1 pandering, minimal extra content besides a story, and a difficulty level that was on the edge of just playing the game for you.
If we're extremely lucky, they'll assess what things succeeded or failed about each game. If they're GameFreak, they'll assess that one or both were bad and never repeat the good parts of it again.
