Modern games are getting Pokemon based on shapes that are easy to make in 3D software, like there were at least few Pokemon with torl (torus or donut shape) and more obvious spheres, while the sprite gens had more organic, hand drawn shapes and the ones in-between had increasingly more detail as sprites were getting bigger and more colors.
