I just remembered the idea for the opalized fossil 'mon, and decided to go look up fossils found in Australia. What I came across was the Muttaburrasaurus. I think it could be a nice candidate myself, maybe the large part on its snout could look like a large opal rock during his first stage, then in the second form it grows more opal areas all over its' body and the opal snout piece turns into a sweet-ass opal horn?
And here's the kicker: Color change would be the best ability for a sparkling multicolor jewel.
