There's some stuff in it that's cool, but nothing really outstanding, and nothing that isn't done better elsewhere. That is my genuine perspective. Despite that? I like it better than RSE, and I started with RSE.
RS was my first video game period, and I just genuinely don't think it's very good. Despite having a lot of cool locations, it's ugly as shit. Not to mention the plot is dumb as hell. When I was a kid, I was a bit of an elitist about RSE's innate superiority to DPPt, because DPPt just took RSE's dynamic and upscaled it. But today I realize that's not really true. The destructive scale and power of the legendaries involved is greater than Groudon/Kyogre, sure, but the story is simpler and smoother and just overall better for it. Sure Dialga and Palkia look like fucking inarticulate statues, but Kyogre is ugly as shit too, so where's the harm? Hoenn has a really good collection of new Pokemon though. I don't have anything against Sinnoh's dex, but I know other people do, and Gen 5 has a lot of ugly as shit designs, so I feel comfortable saying Hoenn had the cleanest set of new additions until XY.
But like I said at the beginning of my post, that's not enough to really elevate XY. It's just really not as good as everything else when you step back and look at it.
