He doesn't even say that they've been traveling for a long time, even though that can be implied since it takes a while to evolve Charmander into Charizard.

They are just showing that the trainers who can Mega Evolve their Pokemon have a strong bond with the Pokemon they Mega Evolve. The fact that you think Alan's bond with his Charizard is as strong or even stronger than Ash's bond with Charizard confirms you haven't actually watched the show.
