Observations of Gardevoir and Gallade in captivity demonstrate very social creatures, who are naturally inclined to protect and nurture their young. And yet in the wild, young Ralts are found almost exclusively on their own, left to fend for themselves. What's going on?
Teleportation is an ability utilized by many psychic Pokemon. While very effective for escaping predators, especially ones which rely on scent such as Poochyena, the ability is unpredictable and difficult to control without experience. Ralts is no exception. When under extreme stress, Ralts are known to instinctively teleport away, inadvertently separating themselves from their parents. Disoriented and stressed even further by the experience, the poor creature will then continue to transport in random directions until completely and hopelessly lost. In this way, 'orphaned' Ralts are created.
While a tragic reminder of just how cruel nature can be, all is not lost. Unlike a human infant, with a little luck a Ralts is perfectly capable of surviving on its own. Additionally, our scant sightings of Gardevoir in the wild suggest that, should they stumble upon an orphaned Ralts, they're perfectly happy to adopt and care for the child as if it were their own.
