Sorry anon, but shonen at its core is about struggle and growth. Pokemon makes intrinsically bad shonen because Ash isn't allowed to grow.
They can have some decent shonen subplots like Infernape, whose victory against Paul was textbook shonen pottery. But in XY there was no struggle, it was just Ash steamrolling Kalos until he hit a cockblock against Alain, and then he never beat him despite overcoming the conditions that made him lose. He never grew as a character, he just faltered momentarily a couple of times and went right back to where he was. He accomplished nothing, learned nothing, and gained nothing, besides a thirstqueen he didn't ask for.
It just ain't good shonen.
