It was a female mawile and it was a shiny! My ivysaur would have brought it down to perfect health to catch it in 3 hits, but the 3rd hit was a critical hit and the mawile fainted.
I was pretty sad, it took me 10 minutes to encounter a normal one on its own, I'll probably never find a shiny mawile again.
