At the extreme end you have designs like Chewtle and Dreadnaw, where the former looks like a newborn and the latter like a middle aged organism. An intermediary stage would have helped immensely, as would some better redesigns desu.
If we're talking minor differences like Sandshrew and Sandslash, then no mid stage is required - but I can't think of any recent mons that have fit that criteria.
