The M8 should have just been the champions fighting eachother. Ash should have never been part of it. Alola is a joke and shouldn't have been included. Both Ash and Alain should have failed to even qualify, they're trash who struggled just to win regional conferences.
It should have been Lance, Drake, Steven, Brandon, Cynthia, Iris, Leon, and either Wallace or Alder or a wild card like Geeta or Professor Oak. An actual championship with no plot armor or protagonist bias getting in the way of the kino. Couple this with events in games across Nintendo IPs, especially 'picking teams' like how Splatoon and Pokemon Go do, and Pokemon as a franchise would have hit a considerable surge. Ash being there was just dragging it all down, sucking away all the kino and preventing marketing gold like this. But we've already known that for the last several gens.
