The idea they're only ever in conflict comes from how canon mostly gives you brief snapshots into their lives, and most of those snapshots happen to involve both them arguing and also apocalyptic events

Also the fact they have completely opposite careers/work locations means they're not even spending all their waking hours with each other anyway, which reduces conflict by the time they come home. Meanwhile Wallace/Winona being coworkers destroyed their relationship.
