Lining up the snippet from the thumbnail with the map from SM, there's definitely something going on over Poni Island. The red could just be the evening sky to make the atmosphere seem more dramatic, but the purple... stuff where the altar is and whatever that thing is above the Battle Tree probably has to do with the events of the story (possibly the climax given the location, like how the Sinnoh map in Platinum showed the Distortion World opening up on top of Mt. Coronet). Also, as others have already pointed out, notice how the rocks just off the coast are gone.
The left side with Ula'Ula didn't seem any different aside from the reddish sky, but again, that could just be a design choice.
In any case, I guess this means they're showing us the full map in the trailer, so we might get more from that.
