Wouldn't say it makes more sense than a sword (Team Plasma having some medieval motifs and whatnot), but it does its job quite well. And it's funny you mention the acrobatics, cause when thinking about it, it's kinda true. I don't know any cane/staff users that don't do flippy shit with that thing, closest one would be Eagle in Street Fighter, and even he does some lengthy jumps as part of his moveset.
