I mean, the Nuzlocke format itself started from that comic, and fuck man, I'll never forget how passionate and lively the community was when Nuzlocke was this huge, new thing. There were dozens of different comics and all of them ranged from okay to actually phenomenal.
But even without that, I won't deny that Nuzlocke's greatest hook was always getting emotionally invested in Pokemon you never thought you'd give a shit about. And that's genuine and that's legitimate but that leads to the overleveling and the problem of what kind of play is incentivized; permadeath plus emotional attachment means that you'd be a dummy not to play with ludicrous caution. Which isn't a fun way to play.
