>>33901508The Spoink/Grumpig designs were made by someone who wasn't paying much attention when th concept first came through so it's not as finalized as some others, the original idea for it was a polynesian fire dancer mixed with polynesian pig roast. Someone decided it should have to do with lava rocks and then just made Spoink have a rock and then Grumpig be just a pig roast. But again, it's not finalized.
The Lotad line was firstly created with the idea of adding a new Fighting-type but it seems fine to me that it would have adapted to being more defensive. Plus, it's literally a shield, which is kind of funny.
Pikachu dragon is being kept because of dubs (although not sure why some dubs are conserved and others squashed...)

Also, the design for Mankey does nake sense. The original dubs (again, dubs? but oh well) said that they ran a sandwich shop. Several people then threw ideas around for what type it would be, and the consensus ended up being that it should be Grass/Psychic to a: have the proper ingredients/be associated with food (as grass types have an association with food and edibles, like witb Tropius) and be able to communicate with the customers/read their minds.
The design everyone decided on was one that based it on monkeys grooming eachother, replacing the bugs with seasonings and spices - they would groom their fellow mankeys to season their food in the wild and add it to sandwiches at the shop.
Pic related was the Mankey design everyone decided on - after literally everyone liked this one, a couple people started ignoring it and making new designs.
It was an organic process and there have already been 3 or 4 OTHER designs for mankey and primeape after this that have nearly no support except for people who haven't seen the first one or were part of the original process.
