The emotion/temper is really good imo because it's a carry over from his problems in OS/Johto. Ash after the Indigo League just stayed in bed for a week or so out of frustration.
In Hoenn, Ash knows how to take his losses, and train up for the next time, but his emotion still flows.

His Sinnoh Team handling Paul was great though. Loved it from the League episodes I saw. Although, I also saw Torterra getting shafted once it evolved from Grotle which really saddened me. Chimchar hijacked Ash's attention.
