She didn't want to do it but was willing to do it to get something she needed; to me it felt like she thought she was in control of the situation until the end, but then realized that what she had convinced herself was her being strong and independent had actually really betrayed someone she cared about.
I can understand why it would leave you sour but on that level I think it was kind of important that she learn that being too independent can lead to problems, you know? Like the "I have to do what I have to do to survive" might be okay when you're never expecting to be in the same town twice, but when you're settled down with someone, it's selfishness instead of pragmatism.
