I never bothered reading tutorials as a kid in Gen 3 and assumed moves were physical or special based on if they actually looked like a physical attack or not. People who dislike the physical/special split, why the fuck is a literal BITE attack a special move? Why is Shadow Ball, a magic flying projectile ball of darkness, a physical move? Why is Dragon Claw, where you literally slash at your opponent, a special move? Why is Pikachu Volt Tackling and physically ramming into a Pokemon in the anime a special type move?
It feels incredibly limiting if you just say all moves of a certain type are automatically either physical or special. And it makes no logical sense for a good amount of moves. Signal Beam, Ice Punch, Fire Punch, Hyper Voice, Leaf Blade, Crabhammer, Hyper Beam, Tri Attack, Vine Whip, Beat Up, etc.
