If they are animated with the 'souls' of the spirit trio, which works well since they embody life, there could only ever be three of them. Not to mention, those "souls" would give them the life and sentience required for pokemon. It also fits in with the golem theme, seeing as they traditionally have to be animated by a scroll or magical artifact.
