Do you know the gyms in order for gens 1 and 2 by any chance?
The game is only really hard for the first half. After the second half, the difficulty tapers off anyways so it's really only remembered for that early 20-30 levels before stage 3 evolutions come into play.
>Gen 1>First three gyms were Brock, Misty, Lt. Surge>Gen 2Bulbasaur crushes the first two, and resists the third. Charmander has trouble with Brock, gets swamped with Misty, and has difficulty with Surge due to no resistances
>First three gyms were Falkner, Bugsy, WhitneyCyndaquil doesn't care about Falkner, and bends Bugsy's ass open, while Chikorita has trouble with Falkner, and gets crushed by Bugsy's Scyther (Wing attack is no joke on its own, but Fury Cutter is not to be slept on). Both of them are equally weak against Whitney.
