They were molded by mentally ill people who can't separate fiction from reality and normalized things like kinning to them. Now those tumblr teens are late teens or young adults, and Covid forced them to be online even more which made their mental health deteriorate even further. It's just another example of radicalization of young, impressionable people through algorithm induced echo chambers. That's why it's gotten so bad in the last few years.
I'm not even saying this to make fun of people like that, it's genuinely a mental health problem. You'll see that the majority of people throwing shitfits over fictional characters are Americans because it's very difficult for them to get mental health care.
