But uh, Jan is a Nuzlocker. And half of those monsters you've outlined are quite rare in Crystal. It's unlikely that he'll encounter Gastly, Growlithe, Dunsparce, and so on. Unown is basically a joke. Sure you can spot one. But it's Unown. So, yeah.
With that said, I don't necessarily agree with Jan's take that Johto monsters are bad. I suspect that a lot of them were probably pretty good for the era in which they debuted and that they just got power crept into relative obscurity with changes to the system and the introduction of newer, sometimes similar but better-optimized Pokemon, rendering whatever niche they had obsolete. I've always felt like it was sort of irresponsible or unfair for him to go down the list of the dex and say

However, I will say that I'm open to being wrong and that maybe the idealist version of Gen 2 that I'm talking about doesn't exist, or that maybe my interpretation of Jan's perspective is flawed or incomplete somehow. I know that he's spent a lot of time with Crystal Kaizo, much more than I've spent with the base game, for sure. So I have no idea how that might have influenced his opinion. But I genuinely don't think that, when discussing why the Gen 2 dex is weak, he was thinking from a Gen 2 perspective. I think he was thinking from an HG/SS perspective.
