The townspeople became annoyed by the storyteller and the chaos that his stories cause and therefore they killed him. He couldn't finish his last story the prince and the raven. Somehow he came back to life or at least exists in some pocket dimension. No one wanted to play the role of Princess Tutu from the story the prince and the raven therefore the storyteller transformed a duck into a girl called Ahiru (it just means duck, not a japanese name). Ahiru transforms back to a duck when she behaves like one and then she has to touch water to transform back.
