>>37644298I've kinda thought about this for a while. It's definitely not perfect, so please give any corrections you can think of.
Pokemon types can be categorized into one of three "themes": Physical, Elemental, and Spiritual / Supernatural. These types are categorized into these themes by their type matchups (e.g. water, an elemental type, only has advatnages / disadvantages against other elemental types), and what their type represents (generally, physical attributes like being fit (fighting), or the ability to fly would fall under the physical tree).
This gives us pic related, which categorizes each type into one of the three themes.
>normal, fighting, flyingThese all describe physical qualities and abilities (or the lack thereof) of the pokemon, with the exception of tornadus.
>rock, steelThese are more makeup types, as most rock and steel types are actually made entirely of rock and steel.
>grass, iceThese are the transitionary types going into elemental, since they have many non-1x matchups with physical types, and many of their pokemon use the similar theming of makeup as a justification for the typing.
>ice, water, groundIce pokemon also tend to fall into this subcategory, where the type is based on the habitat of the pokemon.
>electric, poison, fireThese are the types in the "wielding" subcategory of elements, since their pokemon are not usually made entirely out of electricity or fire, nor is it really based on habitat. Instead, these pokemon typically can secrete or launch out their element. Notable exceptions are grimer/muk, and the trubbish line.
