There are several instances where they say months have passed and I remember they said they had to wait months between Ash getting his 8th badge and the start of the league tournament in Kanto and Hoenn.

Gladion actually had 4 Pokemon. Lycanroc, Umbreon, Silvally and Zoruark. Why they didn't make it a 4v4 is a good question.

The reason it's an issue in Pokemon is because Ash has a set goal as opposed to something like the Simpsons so time should be an important aspect of the show and they have mentioned times where months have passed yet Ash is still 10 and will continue to be so with barely any sense of progression towards becoming a Pokemon Master.
