I know there's precedent in the AU movies that Ash would've been able to successfully travel solo, but would he have been able to LEAD a group? In DP, Brock was still there; in BW, Cilan filled the Brock role; in XY, while Ash was technically the leader of that group, Clemont still filled the Brock role in terms of chores, cooking, etc.; in SM, Ash was part of a school and lived in a professor's house; and in JN, Ash and Goh were employed and could just return to base whenever they needed.
