The nice thing about injection molding is there are nearly limitless and exact colors to choose from. You're correct in saying I wouldn't have to worry about painting then.
Can I get a show of hands. How many people would want to buy one of my Gardevoir figures if I put a small batch up for sale? If there's enough of you, I might just take the plunge and get the plastic injection molding machine I've had my eye on. Granted, I'd have to be careful not to get Nintendo'd, but I'd be willing to take a small risk.
If I do get it, then I'm going all out. Switch-out arms/faces, Custom packaging, custom insert, hand numbered bases... I like to do things right.
