Random ass lurker here, this moment when these threads actually made me try second playthrough to see if the game really went to shit. To my surprise, it's not bad (at least for my "I hate everything past Gen 6" standards") and in one night I got to fourth badge.
Some noteworthy things that might be useful for repeated playthroughs:
- Wisteract and Electaburst are tied for the objectively best Pokemon you can get playthrough wise. Got Wisteract (Nunvil's evo) after just the first badge, because Nunvils and Puppillons have a chance of holding an item that evolves them. Wisteract gets Moonblast (and Hex/Ominous Wind) from Move Reminder. Basically you're set up for half of the game with this thing and you can trivialize second gym (which I've also struggled with on my first playthrough).
- A lot of Fakemon can evolve instantly if you know how to abuse it/you don't mind slight grind/you get lucky and you SHOULD do it thanks to early move tutor and move reminder. Besides the above example, there's mentioned Chubiburny, Hikiloo, Excalibould, Half of Xeno forms (you should probably savescum that Elekid X for Xenolith).
- Koinkoin is incredibly optimal for this game in almost any team and I'm sad I've already had it in my team before. Now with even more things to pay for (especially Internet Move Tutor) than there were before and with Money Incense also around that time, if anyone here wants to do a playthrough where you do everything, including postgame, I recommend it. It's just not useful for second gym right when you catch it, but that's it.
