It's not hard, klutzes are cute because their antics result in slapstick comedy and induce chain events of disasters, or otherwise evoke pity, have your OCs slip ups result in something funny but awful happening to themselves or others. Pairing it up with a cute appearance helps evoke a big "Awwww" by making your audience want to coddle or protect them. There will always be people who find it annoying, but that's not a matter of executing the trope correctly as much as it is some people not having their brain wired to care for (or lovingly bully) cute, helpless things.
