Lister here, X&Y are great games and yeas they do have their faults. But I think the main reasons are the story which is lacking, the characters who I didn't care for, and the post-game which is somewhat bare.
And the way you see it as easy may not be the same for the kids today, I can sweep through the X&Y gyms with ease, but a 7 year old child might have a struggle cause most kids tend to rely on one pokemon out of 6 or just have vendor trash pokemon like Delcatty.
Look, I think that what's really going through you is nothing but nostalgia and you need to let that go sometimes.
