I'm trying to write a Marnie thing but it's hard. I need the MC to meet her and then do stuff with her for some time before the real stakes of the plot kick in, so that it's not like "Hey you and this COMPLETE stranger have to go on an adventure/save the day now." Only, I'm finding it really hard to... start? Marnie doesn't give me a lot to work from canon. She has very little interests or hobbies from the games and she basically doesn't exist in the anime. So like, what could the MC and Marnie actually... do? I wrote them meeting in the park and it became the narrative equivalent of awkwardly staring at each other for a while. I need something for them to DO.
>Just have them battle pokemon
I mean, yeah, that's the obvious one. But that's not something that's really, like, the foundation to start a relationship. Like the MC wouldn't battle Marnie and then spend the rest of the day hanging out with her just because of it. I kind of need the MC and Marnie to do... SOMETHING. I barely even matters what it is so long as they can spend most of the day doing it. Also, my MC is starting out with no pokemon available due to his pokemon being in the hospital with appendicitis, and I can change that if I need to, but the rest of the story is just easier if he has none of his own pokemon in the beginning. So meeting in a completely random pokemon battle isn't a good option.
