I really liked Pokemon Colosseum and still think it's a novel idea that should be played by most Pokemon fans, but Gale of Darkness is perfectly skippable. They smoothed out the gameplay, improved the character models, and gave you more Pokemon to choose from, but the whole thing felt like it really didn't need to exist. I enjoyed Colosseum's slightly darker tone and felt like it never got to the point of edginess because it kept a similar tone throughout the game. Gale of Darkness was more of a kid's game with a big evil that they tried to make as edgy as possible.
Also the enormous amount of Pokemon you could catch in Gale of Darkness kind of hurt the game. In Colosseum you were catching Johto mons you couldn't get anywhere else aat the time (in gen 3 I mean), and you were forced to use mons you otherwise wouldn't use to get through a fairly difficult game. In Gale of Darkness you were grabbing up mostly Hoenn and Kanto Pokemon which were available in the main games at the time, and the quality of the mons you caught was decently high while the difficulty was low.
So yeah, OP is correct. I would still argue that Colosseum was great though.
