You know, when I got back into the anime to watch JN, I saw all the criticisms of XY and thought the show must've not aged well since I saw it. Maybe it was too serious or whatever the criticism of the day was on it. I was quiet about liking XY, gave a lot of weight to the criticism, tried justifying why I liked it.
Then I rewatched it.
XY remains the best season of this show bar none. The art direction was amazing, its writing for the series was superb, the animation was top tier, the music were all hops, the fights were ingenious, ASH was ingenious, it took so many loose ends from XY, like Diantha's lack of personality, Sycamore's lack of place in the plot, or Korrina in general and improved them beyond anything. Even its filler was more entertaining, better looking, and more worth watching. Its cast is top tier, its *everything* is top tier. And more than anything, its greatest boon, is that it remains the only series bar maybe DP and the BF end of AG that actually makes me feel hyped when I watch it. 7 years later, and Iku Z and everything around it remains one of the few things in this franchise that gets my blood going, and you can't say that about anything else.
XY was the peak of this series, and everyone since has been lying to me to tell me it isn't.
