I just finished S/M and I would like to have a discussion where we can rank and critisize all the generations.
Beforehand I have to say that my view of S/M is probably worse than it actually was, since I thought you were able to go to Kanto with Lilly together only to find out that you can't and that there is 0 post game content.
Gen 2 > Gen 3 > Gen 1 > Gen 6 > Gen 5 > Gen 4 > Gen 7
Even though Gen 2 has some big flaws, like an empty Kanto and the fact that you never really get to fight the boss of Team Rocket it feels that there is so much stuff to do there. Things like day/night and day specific events like the bug catching contest made the world so much more alive, it felt like there was so much to explore. Given that those were GBC times you gotta give GameFreak credit that those things were truly groundbreaking.
Gen 3 had contest, a likeable story, good villains (unfortunately the last one you could take seriously ever) and nice way to explore the map (esp early on with the boat). Also the Battle Frontier in Emerald is amazing.
Gen 1 also had a very fun way to explore the map, a subtle storytelling, but unfortunately no post game content.
Gen 6 was amazing until the 3rd bagde, so much to explore, unfortunately it felt really rushed afterwards, kind of like if you were in Kanto in Gen 2.
