Because the boiggest Switch demo is a section of humanity that grew up with Pokémon and thus were prime to buy into its return, once they had finally bought a piece of Nintendo kit that the games were appearing on (because few adult gamers bought a DS and nobody bought a 3DS, which is why Pokémon was able to break top 5 in DS and outsold all but karting on 3DS, mirroring the GBA, when no adults bought it and Pokémon top-scored by default).

Not to mention the flagrant misrepresentation of sales figures for GBA and 3DS, because until they actually launched, adults didn't give a shit for the systems being sold - one a portable SNES when PS2 was eating the world and the other an obsolete handheld with a gimmick in the era of smartphhones more powerful than it. Meaning little timmy could propel the games to the top of the charts, just by falling for the meme of the branding, as no cunt else was buying games in numbers comparable to pokémon, nor were third parties giving it any serious support.

Not to mention you're ignoring up to the late '00's, reviews were driven entirely by print media, thus held more weight by being held to journalistic standards compared to what has since popped up after the death of the printed gaming magazine. These days, it's best to find the few reviewers who do things right and listen to them, than it is taking the average opinion of them all, as there's too many lunkheads doing it for a junket than doing it for the love of the industry.

Anon, you had lost ANY hope of making any kind of statement, the JIFFY the brand hit US stores and took off. Understand? You never had any agency regarding the direction of the brand, as kids everywhere were already buying in heavily and those with younger siblings pozzed them, which helped propagate the brand further.
People AVOIDED the GBA like the plague, Pokémon still sold 16m copies and took the top three spots for overall system sales. When you get that kind of response, despite the system underperforming elsewise, you don't need to listen to the squeakers - you don't need to change to satisfy them.
