There's not one single person on this god damn planet that would sit on a 90 billion dollar franchise, have one hiccup, and just go "oh no guys, we did really really super bad, time to pack it up, everyone go home!"
Even if the game had sold literally one (1) copy, the franchise would still be plenty safe and the company would do one of two Japanese corporation-y things:
-Absolute seppuku, both literally and figuratively, some higher-up would kill themselves and the game-side of the franchise would falter for a bit, they'd apologize and Gen 9 would either be a complete backtrack of the series, or a soft reboot.
-Stubborn pride; they'd just plod along and not comment on the failure at all, rolling with it like it never happened. Gen 9 might have a couple minor fixes to draw people (specifically the Japanese fanbase) back, but it would be minor and they'd never apologize.
