RBY is even simpler but it's not subpar. The games unironically don't have to be Shakespearean tragedies. Their world-building and atmosphere are really great, and if you removed an overarching narrative from it, both of those things would plummet through the floor.
You should try actually engaging with the world, slowing down to talk to NPCs, think about the design of the locations and their relevance to one another as well as the events that take place within them, and then assess the information in its complete context, instead of blitzing through the gyms as fast as possible and saying "DONE! THAT WAS EASY AND BAD!"
