The Emerald character himself is shit because he's introduced as a shallow shithead who doesn't give a damn about Pokemon, just the battles. He somehow befriended a Latios and Latias, got Wally's Pokedex and starter after Wally got shafted and written off, and was written as this hyper-competent battler who can take down the Frontier Brains without even trying, in addition to having mystic powers and a mysterious secret mission that he won't reveal to anyone. Halfway through we get his backstory, but it's so pointless it only serves to emphasize how much of a mary sue he is. Emerald can go choke on his own dirt gun.
He's also designed like a clown.
