My sister asked for a copy of Yellow in 98/99, wasn't near launch but I was about 3 or 4 (born in 95). None of the stores had it but Dad managed to get a copy of Red. We never got too far, she would pick Bulbasaur and get up to around Saffron, get stuck and quit, I'd restart with Charmander and do the same thing. I actually didn't bother with it after that until I saw FRLG advertised years later, aaked for a copy for my birthday and was hooked after that. Never cared for the anime though.
