As far as graphics go the battle scenes are only on par with original Gen 2 games. However, from the little I've seen in my own playing in addition to the screenshots from an anon who played it here recently, the overworld looks 10x better than the Brown sprites and battle screens. Trying to save it for Christmas has really been pushing my willpower to its limits, and I only have a randomized HG ROM plus never having played D/P/Pt to attribute my resistance to.
