How would you go about spicing up the Pokemon battle formula? Was never particularly fond of the stamina system most other spinoffs use, but I do agree that making it harder to spam the same move would be ideal. Current concept is to remove PP altogether but impose debuffs on either the move or its user if a move is used consecutively, so that you still have the option to use it but it comes at a higher cost.
I do try and think about how to shake things up further and make the battles involve the player in a more active sense, but apart from including some input commands to make each move have a more potent effect (which is probably a bad idea since that would require a lot of work to make and many would probably prefer to toggle that fearure off anyway), I can't think of much that wouldn't make things stray too far from the genre that I enjoy to begin with.
