Johto is a confused region with terrible degrees of experimentation, my problem with HGSS is that they could have fixed the problems and they didn't, look at FRLG adding Sevii Islands as pace breakers and exp buffer right were its needed in contrast.
BW linearity is ridiculous but it mostly ends after the dreamyard, don't get me wrong that entire section is ass but the game picks up at pinwheel and you don't get annoying interruptions until the ferris wheel, Bianca and Chargestone with N being annoying again.
What I love about BW is the little secrets each route have if you explore despite the linearity, be dark grass or a TM there's always a reward in each route.
