Before Nu-Exp. Share, you had to stick with a team of 5 or 6 because if you didn't, you've essentially wasted earned Trainer battle experience points on the Pokemon you swapped out for new ones. Rotating your team would make you fall way too far behind the level curve, forcing you to take the time to grind levels.
However, with the Nu-Exp. Share, you're encouraged to swap in/out Pokemon due to the sheer amount of Exp. that is passed out. If you keep it on and don't rotate your team around, your pre-planned team will be horribly overleveled. The Exp. scaling and Nu-Exp. Share ensures that you get to train many more Pokemon without falling too far behind the level curve, avoiding grinding. It encourages you to catch and use almost every Pokemon you can find, which helps the REAL sole purpose of the game: Completing your Pokedex. Not sure what you think it is.
You either turn it off and stick with 5 or 6 Pokemon, or keep it on and be free to rotate your team as you see fit.
