Like what I mentioned with Greninja, before the series was rushed to a conclusion and wrapped up for the generation 7 anime that romance subplot was gradually building up to something and had been consistently developing from the first handful of episodes. Over the span of a few years it had gradually developed, sometimes in the background but also in the foreground. It too however fell victim to this rushed wrapping up. It never really got a proper resolution and it never received any real conclusion. The kiss has been memed to death, and yes it was massive when it happened, but immediately after those who had been following the series were left with a ".....wait, so that's it?". A 30 second scene at the end of 3 years of a subplot. There was hopium, in retrospective it was copium, that it wouldn't be just left like that and many people hoped for the generation 7 anime to basically be X&Y2, to continue on either directly with at least some of the same characters or at least in the same spirit as X&Y. This turned out to be in vain however. Serena was sent off to Hoenn and wouldn't even be seen for another 7 YEARS after that episode aired, and when she did show up that 3 year developing romance subplot wasn't even mentioned. The entire ash anime ended without it even ever being acknowledged again, something which anons at the time on /padt/ which I brosed at the time had discussed as worst case scenario.
