It's a JRPG where you can competitively battle your party and transfer them to the newer game for further tweaking and updating.
Imagine if Final Fantasy was made for 6 year olds plot-wise but had the same battle systems. Now, picture being able to smash together your favorite characters into one party. That's Pokemon.
I haven't beaten a Pokemon game since Y. The Sun/moon set didn't hold my attention (barely finished the trials) and Let's Go felt like a retread with the worst stat grinding of any pokemon game.
I still find the designs and worldbuilding (hidden in places like pokedex entries!) interesting, though.
