If you're going in without knowledge, the best thing is to pick whichever one you like the appearance of the most then.
Top choices would be stuff only available very late in the game if not the starter (Shinki, Sariel, Reimu, Raiko [base game, not expansion], etc.), or stuff that could beat the entire game by itself (ChenA, MikoS, etc.)
Do also try to tell them that the starter choice is not that important in the long run since everyone can be caught ingame no matter what. This isn't Pokemon, there are no mutually exclusive starters or legendaries or event-legendaries or anything like that.
